The department was organized in 1845 and now has over 150 members and serves an area of over 8 square miles with over 12,000 residents. We respond to over 700 calls for assistance annually. The department consists of 5 companies, Eagle Hose Co., Relief Hose Co., Star Hose Co., Standard Hose Co., Phenix Hook & Ladder Co., a Rescue Squad, a water rescue team, Fire Police a ladies auxiliary and a junior fire department. Innumerable hours are devoted to the increasingly difficult task of becoming and remaining a Firefighter and / or EMT. For a new member to become a Firefighter, he or she must complete the Firefighter 1 course a federal course given by the Suffolk County Fire Academy. In addition, completing and passing the NIMS 100 course was an added requirement, starting in the year 2005. Another separate requirement in the department by-laws specifies that all members must participate in a Haz Mat refresher, Blood Borne Pathogens and Sensitivity / Work Place Violence classes once a year. Furthermore interior firefighters are required to attend an annual “hands on” training at Suffolk County Fire Academy. There is a restored 1848 working hand pumper on display at the main firehouse and a antique 1933 Mack pumper in the works of being restored, this truck was in service in Greenport from 1935 to 1962.
